I think the only thing i take from the quote is that we were betrayed by a supposed conservative, either by himself or his administration. While I agree all candidates deserve a fair shake, the idealogical differences between conservatives and liberals like Gore is a huge one to overcome, especially with this much power at stake. Its hard for me to imagine myself in the position i was in back in 2000 doing something different...Maybe 2004...

that said, this election cycle, we've all learned our lesson. i'm personally considering all candidates because there are no conservatives in the race. it's a sad state of affairs when we have this group to choose from...

I think the wisdom of the quote is simply to say that because a politician is in line with your beliefs in one place doesn't mean they will either act on those shared beliefs or act consistent with what knit the two of you together in other areas.

Bush enacted onerous spying on Americans prior to 9/11, Katrina wasn't predicated by any act of terror and those tax cuts were long in the making. Perhaps we wouldn't have gone to war, but then again perhaps we would have.

There's certainly no assurance Gore would've done better, though it seems plausible few could've done worse. But perhaps the evangelical camp, myself included, was more than hasty to preclude giving Al Gore a fair shake simply because he was a Democrat.

the question is this though - you are never going to agree 100% with a candidate, so how do you make your decisions? You decide based on what is important at the time, and you make assumptions about their character based on their general political stances and past experience to carry through the unforseen issues.

So, then, how is the evangelical decision making myopic? In 2000, what indication did we have that we would be in an unwarranted war? Wouldnt we have believed that the personality of bush (compassionate conservatism) would be better prepared for issues of terrorism and natural disasters? How is that myopic? And what's to say Gore would have handled any of this any better?

Seems like monday-morning quarterbacking to me...
